15th Street Garden Project

The Big Bang foundation, has made a decision to take a stand and step up to help provide a safer and more welcoming community. Most individuals who grew up on the southeast side of Cedar Rapids can tell you first hand that it is known to be one of the most violent prone sides of town in need of a good cleaning. After doing a community clean up the month prior, the Big Bang Foundation were looking for other ways to show that we all can be apart of positive change when we choose to lead by example.

The Wellington Heights Neighborhood Association has also made great efforts towards cleaning up our community. They initially started by shutting down an apartment complex in the area best know for parties, drug dealing, and lots of violence. They have also hosted clean up events in the area and have a community garden in the heart of Cedar Rapids’ toughest neighborhood. The Big Bang Foundation decided that now would be the perfect opportunity to not only give back to the community they grew up in, but also to guide the young children of today by having them come out and help plant the garden together.

Around 40 men, women, and children showed up through the following weekends straight to help put together a previously abandoned garden. Fertilizing with new soils, planting potatoes and other fresh healthy foods that are not only great to watch grow and maintain, but also healthy to provide to the community when the growing process is done. Week after week, The Big Bang Foundation and Wellington Heights Neighborhood members teamed up together to put together an amazing garden and have recently finished up with the garden and now have accomplished a full set up that will grow many great natural foods to share with others. Thanks to Wellington Heights Neighborhood Association and Big Bang Foundation, our community is looking clean, feeling safer and most importantly coming together again like it once was.
